Celebrating Dad... I'll never forget

Posted by Cassandra Birdd on

I wonder what thought crossed my Dad's mind when he realized he was having twins!  So we have this coffee mug in the store that says, Dad, the Older I Get, the Smarter you become...so true.  My father has taught me to love learning and the importance of education.  I sometimes I wonder how different life would be had he not taught me so many life skills.

While I was growing up my dad was always Mr. Fix it. So naturally when something breaks at the Treehouse, Dad gets a call! He has taught me a lot over the years from electrical, to painting, to working on a lathe, yes, my father has been very handy to have around.  I still remember turning 16, and my dad taught me how to drive a manual transmission car, how to change the oil, and even how to change a tire.

I'll never forget the first time I had to use Dad's tire changing skills. I had gone for a shopping trip to Des Moines with gal from school who was a year older than I was. On our way back home, we heard this pop in our tire and started getting pulled right off the road. It was pouring outside, and we both looked at each other a little wide-eyed. Danielle was already in tears by the time we got out to see the tire was flat. Believe it or not, this was before the days of high schoolers having cell phones...I know, now I feel old.  So, we envisioned never making it back home. I told her not to worry, I had changed a tire before. But, I had done it on my car, not hers and I was feeling a bit lost without my sister's help this time.  We got out the Jack and the tire and started praying we'd pull this off.  And, no sooner had we started debating where to place the jack on her car, when a car had pulled over behind us.  We glance quickly back to eachother wondering how this stranger situation might go.  Thankfully, a woman got out and offered to help us with her hydraulic jack.  We were very blessed to have her help as it was pouring outside.  But, in the back of my mind, I was thankful to have been shown the ropes by good old Dad at least once had we not been so blessed that day. It's no wonder why I married a builder; I love having such a handy husband around!

I hope you too remember all the ways your Dad taught you the ropes this week. Dad is still quite helpful to this day at the Treehouse! Thanks Dad!

If you need help spoiling your Dad, come work with our staff on a wide variety of gifts from custom framing, to Harley mugs, to sports gear, and even gourmet Amish Candy, we can help you find a perfect way to show your dad he is loved.

Memorial Day Event May 22nd - 27th

Posted by Cassandra Birdd on

A few years ago, I saw an Artist's painting of fallen soldiers that sticks with me to this day. Thinking about this painting reminds me of how truly blessed we are to live in this country on Memorial Day. It was fairly graphic. One third of the top section of the painting showed a bird's eye view of sunny day where a father and mother appeared to be throwing a tennis ball with their 3 year-old son and puppy on a green grassy cliff just few feet away from a very steep cliff at the water's edge. I felt a little nervous for the family with their son so close to the edge, but they were facing away from the edge. When I looked closer at the cliff that made of almost two thirds of the painting, I saw it was not made of dirt or rock, but it was made of soldiers from grassy edge all the way to the bottom of the cliff to the water's edge.  About half of soldiers in various uniform colors were holding both their arms and hands straight up to support the cliff with all their might. Their faces were twisted and groaning from the weight of the cliff made of bodies and their fellow soldiers on their shoulders. Some soldiers were not standing. Some were fallen. It was a very bloody scene on the side and bottom of the cliff. So much sacrifice was painted that I still remember the scene years later. It was beautiful and terrifyingly sad all at once. The family was so beautifully free, and the soldiers were supporting their American Dream with precious blood at a great cost.

We are truly blessed that men and women and families are willing to give their lives for our freedoms. I wish I could find the photo online to share it, but I have searched and searched, and now it will only be a permanent image in my mind.

Memorial Day always makes me so thankful and appreciative for all the soldiers and families connected to them who have given and will give their lives to protect our families, and our country's values.  Join us in the celebration and appreciation for all they have done for us.

Give back to a soldier with our new Soldier Soap. Denise, one of our local artists, makes wonderful skincare products and has created the Soldier Soap to be her way of giving back.  When her son joined the armed forces, she found he was required to purchase all of his toiletries after arriving on base.  With each bar of Soldier Soap we sell, she will send one bar to a soldier overseas.  Add a personal note to help the soldier feel a little more connection to home.

Join us as we celebrate our military families.
